FROM THE DESK OF EXECUTIVE COUNCILOR, AGRICULTURE, LAHDC KARGIL

Kargil one of the two Districts of Ladakh region extends from Zojila pass of greater Himalaya to Fotola. The western part of the Tibetan plateau. The population of the Kargil is approximately 1.20 lac scattered over a large area. The climate of the region is very harsh and severe in winter and the area remains cutoff from the rest of the world for several months. The main occupation of the people is agriculture. Around 75% of the people are associated with primary sectors that is agriculture in one or other way. The impact of secondary sectors that is Industries and Tourism are significant and play little role in the economic activities of the people. No doubt agriculture is the back bone of Kargils economy. But

unfortunately this sector remained a non priority sector. Now, it is high time priority should be given to this sector for the sustainable development of Kargil. It is only agriculture which can definitely alleviate the economic condition of the people. For making agriculture healthy concrete steps shall be taken such as the primitive techniques shall be replaced by modern and scientific methods, more land shall be brought under cultivation, high yielding and drought resistance seeds shall be supplied, investment in agriculture sector shall be encouraged, awareness among the people to grow cash crop shall be created and efforts to make available market for the products.

Yak and Pashmina goats are exotic and unique animals of Ladakh. For production of more wool and mutton, exotic species like Karakul and Marino were introduced. Jersy cows and bulls were introduced for production of more milk. Artificial inseminations were also introduced with good success rate. The ultimate aim is to make Kargil self reliant in food grain production.
